Our client is a well-regarded engineering consultancy partnering with Australian industry across the full asset lifecycle, including studies, design, project execution, commissioning, operations and decommissioning. With a strong pipeline of work across mining, energy and resources, they are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Team Leader to join their Brisbane office on a permanent basis.
About the Role
As Team Leader, Mechanical, you will lead a team of engineers and graduate engineers, ensuring high technical standards, strong communication and a culture of continuous improvement. You will form a key part of the mechanical engineering leadership team, supporting both the technical delivery and strategic direction of the function, while remaining hands-on with complex engineering problems.
You will play an active role in business development, including client meetings, calls and site visits to build relationships and generate new opportunities, supported by regular coaching to strengthen your commercial and client engagement skills. You will also be responsible for leading and mentoring a team of engineers, guiding their technical development, supporting workload allocation, and fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the delivery of mechanical engineering projects, including cost estimation, scope and schedule development, and coordination with engineers, project managers and clients
- Manage the day-to-day activities, priorities and wellbeing of your team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture
- Allocate work based on individual strengths and workloads, ensuring timely and quality delivery
- Provide coaching, mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced team members, including support toward chartered status or RPEQ
- Actively contribute to new business development, including initial contact with prospective clients, attending briefings, and converting qualified leads into project opportunities
- Provide input into proposals, fee structures and scope documentation
- Ensure accurate tracking of team time, billables and reporting against commercial expectations
- Drive continuous improvement in tools, systems and workflows within the mechanical team
About You
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical), with RPEQ
- 7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, including at least 1 year in a site-based role
- Experience or strong familiarity with a consultancy environment is highly regarded; candidates from an owner/operator or onsite background are also encouraged to apply
- Experience working in Australian industry, ideally across mining, energy, chemicals or oil and gas
- Demonstrated project engineering or project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders
- Some prior leadership or management experience preferred
- A genuine interest in business development, client relationships and growing a practice, not just technical delivery
- Commercially aware, pragmatic and solutions-oriented, with strong technical writing and stakeholder communication skills
- Current and unrestricted rights to work in Australia
