Data and AI have moved from "nice to have" to critical business enablers. We're helping a well-established organisation find someone to take genuine ownership of that agenda: not just running a team, but setting the direction for how data, analytics and AI get used across the whole business.
If you've built or matured a data and AI function before, understand what good governance actually looks like in practice, and want a mandate with real weight behind it, this is worth a conversation.
What the role involves
You'll sit at the centre of the organisation's data and AI agenda, turning strategy into things that actually get built and used. That spans data platforms, analytics, AI adoption and information/records management, all under one remit. In practice, you'll be:
* Turning the data and AI strategy into a working roadmap with outcomes people can measure, rather than a slide deck that sits on a shelf.
* Setting the standard for how data is engineered, governed and used for analytics and reporting across the business.
* Building out a practical approach to responsible AI, so adoption moves quickly but stays inside ethical, regulatory and risk boundaries.
* Lifting the maturity of information and records management practices more broadly.
* Acting as a trusted adviser to senior executives and governance committees on where to invest, what the risks are, and what to prioritise next.
* Building genuine partnerships with the business, technology, risk and compliance teams (and some external stakeholders too).
* Leading a capable, motivated team.
What we're after
This isn't a hands-off strategy role, and it isn't a pure technical delivery role either. It sits in between. You'll need commercial judgement, the ability to hold your own with executives and board-level forums, and enough technical depth to know when something is genuinely well-governed versus when it just looks that way on paper.
Ideally you bring:
A solid track record leading data, AI, information management or a related technology function.
Real working knowledge of data governance, data quality and analytics practice, not just the theory.
Hands-on familiarity with modern cloud data tools such as Azure, Databricks and Power BI.
A grounded understanding of AI governance and what responsible, enterprise-scale AI adoption actually requires.
Strong stakeholder instincts, including experience presenting to executive and governance audiences.
A demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
Background and qualifications
You'll have a tertiary qualification in IT, data, information management, business, finance or similar, plus a track record of leading teams and delivering capabilities that matter to the business.
It's a bonus if you also have postgraduate study or professional development in data, AI, governance or leadership, relevant certifications (Azure, AI, Power BI, information management or governance), and experience in financial services, or advisory/consulting.
